MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University softball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon versus the University of Montevallo. Union won the first game 3-2 and lost the second game 13-3. Union moved to 2-9 and the season and 1-4 in conference play. Montevallo moved to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the GSC.
The first game was a pitching duel through the first three innings of scoreless play. The Lady Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Nicole Goggin (1-for-2) doubled down the left field line, driving in Grace White (1-for-2). Union scored again in the fourth when Taylor Manley (1-for-2) hit a double to left center, driving in Goggin. Union added its third run in the fifth inning when Samantha McDaniel (1-for-2) hit a double that scored Alyssa Ward (1-for-3). Montevallo scored two runs in the seventh inning, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to close out the game and claim the 3-2 win.Â
The Lady Bulldogs had four doubles from five hits in the game. Gabby Morris (2-4) threw all seven innings against the Falcons, giving up nine hits, two earned runs, and seven strikeouts.
In game two, Union fell 13-3. Union was led by Goggin and Manley who both hit solo home runs in the fifth inning. Union rounded out its scoring with a Sarah Smith single that drove in Harley Bartholomew.Â
Up next for Union will be the third game of the series against Montevallo, a single game February 28 at 11 a.m. in Montevallo.
