Union softball drops pair of games in Alabama

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. - The Union University softball lost 8-3 to the University of West Alabama and then 7-1 to the University of Alabama Huntsville Friday in two games. Union was supposed to play four games this weekend at Oxford, Ala., but the weather canceled the original tournament. So, Union and a few other teams moved a few games Friday to Albertville. Union dropped to 1-5 on the season.

Union played both of these teams last weekend with Union knocking off No. 20 UAH 12-9 and then falling to UWA 7-6 in eight innings.

In the first game versus West Alabama, Union led 3-2 after four innings. An RBI triple from Gabby Morris and an RBI Double from Samantha McDaniel helped give Union the lead. However, UWA took control in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam. The Tigers tacked on a run in the sixth. Five different players had one hit each for Union. Morris took the loss in the circle.

In the second game versus No. 20 Alabama Huntsville, the Chargers scored two in the second and three in the third to take control early. Two more in the seven put the score at 7-0. Union loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, getting a run when Grace White was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Union left the bases loaded and lost 7-1. Alyssa Ward and Nicole Goggin led with two hits each for Union. Taylor Manley took the loss in the circle.

Up next for Union will be its GSC opener next weekend, February 20-21 at Lee University.
