JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team victorious after an 82-76 win over Mississippi College Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 18-9 overall and 12-7 in the Gulf South Conference, while MC fell to 8-17 overall and 4-15 in the GSC.
Union led early, starting the game off with three straight made field goals to push the Bulldogs lead to an early 6-0. Mississippi College fought hard and kept the game competitive, taking over the lead with a three-pointer, putting the Choctaws up by one, 16-15 at the 12-minute mark. The remainder of the half was back and forth with neither team leading by more than five points. At the end of the first half, the score was 43-38, Bulldogs on top. In the second half the game continued just as the first with Union's largest lead being nine points, 78-69 score with only 1:18 remaining. Union edged the Choctaws 82-76.
Union was led by
LiDonta Hicks-Gentry with 14 points and six rebounds.
Bryson Butler added 13 points and six rebounds,
Tyree Boykin and
Samory Gueye added 12 points, and
Terrandus Smith added 11 points. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 34 percent (9-26) from long range, and 80 percent (25-31) from the free-throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Winceton Edwrds with 24 points. Stefan Bozickovic added 21 points and Zach Jones added 17. The Choctaws shot 45 percent from the field, 39 percent (11-28) from the 3-point line, and 53 percent (7-13) from the foul line.
Up next for Union will be the final regular season game of the year, a road conference game, Thursday, February 27 versus Christian Brothers at 7:00 p.m.
