Union men close out regular season with 85-73 win at CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted an 85-73 win at Christian Brothers University Thursday night. Union improved to 19-9 overall and 13-7 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers ended its season 11-17 on the season and 7-13 in league play. 

Union had already clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament, but tonight's win clinched Union as a No. 5 seed in the tournament. The Bulldogs will for sure be traveling for the quarterfinal game, Tuesday March 3. Union has qualified for five of the six GSC Tournaments since joining the league. 

Union jumped out to an early lead over Christian Brothers. However, the Bucs cut the Union deficit to just one points, 40-39 at the half. Union led by as many as 10 points in the first half. 

CBU continued the momentum of the first half to regain a brief lead of 43-40. But then Union sophomore guard, Tyree Boykin scored four straight points to give Union the lead for good. Union extended its lead to as many as 18 points, 81-63, with 3:23 left to play. Union coasted to the 85-73 win. 

Union was led by Boykin with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Terrandus Smith and Samory Gueye added 14 points each, while Tylandrius Parks scored 13 points. Union shot 55 percent from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from long range, and 77 percent (10-13) from the foul line. 

Christian Brothers was led by Jacob Lyons with 20 points. Daryle Lewis added 17 points, while Aiden Ruthsatz and Mitchell Mays added 15 points each. The Bucs shot 40 percent from the field, 32 percent (8-25) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (15-17) from the free throw line.
