JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball posted a 74-42 victory over Auburn University in Montgomery Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 8-8 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
Union is ranked No. 22 in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll and is receiving votes in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll. With the win, Union remains in a tie for first place in the GSC standings.
This marked the second win of the season for Union over AUM, winning 81-50 back on December 16 in Montgomery, Ala.
The first quarter was played close as Union clung to a 17-15 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes. Union busted the game open in the second quarter, outscoring AUm 24-6 in the period to lead 41-21 at the break. Union used a 17-2 scoring run over six minutes to build its lead.
AUM edged Union 12-10 in a low scoring third period. However, Union extended the lead to the final score with a 23-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Union had three players in double figures led by
Jacie Higgins with 14 points.
Jaelencia Williams posted her seventh double-double on the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and also added a season high six blocks.
Emily Beard added 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Caroline Hogue led with a game high 11 rebounds. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 39 percent (7-18) from 3-point range, and 65 percent (17-26) from the foul line.
Union outrebounded AUM 52-28 in the game, including 16-8 offensively.
AUM was led by Catlin Carter with 11 points. Jordan Brewster hit two 3-pointers to lead AUM in that category and finished with six points. The Warhawks shot 28 percent from the field, 23 percent (5-22) from long range, and 60 percent (3-5) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home GSC game this Saturday, January 11 at 2 p.m. versus West Alabama.
