Union women top West Alabama 85-71

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 85-71 victory over the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 7-6 on the season and 3-5 in league play. 

Union kept pace with the GSC leaders and remain in a four-way tie for first place with one GSC loss. 

Union used a big first half to build the lead. West Alabama led 4-2 early for its only lead of the game. Union pushed out to a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. For the second straight game, Union used the second quarter to pull away. Union added 24 more points to make the halftime lead 20, 49-29. 

West Alabama came out of the locker room with a 7-0 run and outscored Union 21-14 in the third quarter. The Tigers cut the Union lead to nine points twice in the period, the last coming with 2:55 left in the third quarter, 55-46. Union extended the lead back to 13 points, 63-50, at the end of the third. 

The Union lead stayed in double figures for the rest of the game with the largest lead of the night coming, 80-59, with four minutes left in the game. 

Union was led by Jaelencia Williams with 23 points and 10 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season. Emily Beard scored 15 points on five 3-pointers. Jada Smith scored 14 points, while Shanique Lucas and Caroline Hogue added 10 points each. Smith flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 35 percent (8-23) from 3-point range, and 61 percent (19-31) from the foul line. 

West Alabama was led by Bria Dent with 28 points and 17 rebounds, game-highs in both. Naelyn Rios added 16 points and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 11 points. The Tigers shot 38 percent from the field, 18 percent (3-17) from long range, and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. The Tigers outrebounded Union 47-46.
