CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 68-53 win at Delta State University Thursday night. Union improved to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 7-9 on the season and 3-5 in league play.
The win for Union snapped a four-game skid versus DSU dating back to Dec. 31, 2016 when Union won 72-71 in Cleveland.
The game started with three 3-pointers, two from DSU as the Statesmen led 6-3 early. DSU extended its lead to as many as eight points in the game, 21-13, with 8:50 left in the first half. Union started a rally with back-to-back 3-pointers from
Tylandrius Parks. Four minutes later,
Payton Stovall's 3-pointer capped a 16-0 run for the Bulldogs. Union's largest lead of the first half was 29-21 and held a 33-26 lead at the half.
In the second half, Union's lead moved to double figures with a pair of free throws from
Samory Gueye, 39-28. DSU cut its deficit to three points, 42-39, with 12:22 left to play. But Union again extended its lead to double figures 56-45 following a 3-pointer from
Tyree Boykin. Union led by as many as 17 points twice down the stretch.
Union was led by Boykin and Parks with 22 and 21 points respectively. No other Bulldogs scored more that six points in the game. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 24 percent (8-33) from 3-point range, and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line. Union out rebounded DSU 46-36 and committed just six turnovers to nine for the Statesmen.
Delta State was led by Airen Brooks with 19 points and Anderson McCoy with 10 points. The Statesmen shot 33 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-31) from long range, and 83 percent (5-6) from the free throw line.
