JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team fell 73-68 to the University of West Alabama Saturday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 12-3 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
Union was down 21 points, 51-30, with 13:26 left in the game following a 3-pointer from UWA's Darron Johnson. However, Union slowly began to chip away at the deficit.
Union's leading scorer was held scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game. However, the sophomore scored 17 second-half points to spark the Union rally. Boykin's second 3-pointer of the game with 36 seconds left pulled Union to within three points, 68-65. The two teams swapped a couple of free throws possessions and Union's Boykin got his Bulldogs to within to points, 70-68, following two free throws. However, three free throws from UWA in the final 17 seconds and a turnover from Union sealed the Tiger win. West Alabama was 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the second half.
In a very low scoring first half, Union was down 27-19 at the break. West Alabama scored the game's first seven points and built a 12 point lead over the Bulldogs in the first half.
Terrandus Smith tipped in a shot at the buzzer to cut the lead to single digits at halftime.
Union outscored UWA 49-46 in the second half.
Union was led by Boykin with 17 points.
Samory Gueye added 11 points, while Smith and Tylandruis Parks added 10 points each. Parks finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range, and 69 percent (16-23) from the free-throw line.
West Alabama was led by Johnson with a game-high 25 points. LaJuan Hardy added 14 points, Deandre Harper scored 11 points, and Mike Davis scored 10 points with 10 rebounds. The Tigers shot 40 percent from the field, 48 percent (12-25) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (15-17) from the foul line.
