Interview with Rahn (senior) following second match
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team is off to a good start after two wins in day one of the Christian Brothers University Classic. Union defeated Kentucky Wesleyan University 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) in the morning match, followed by a 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) win over Maryville University in the afternoon match.
In the win over KWC, Union scored first in all three set and did not trail in either of the first two sets. Union trailed 6-4 early in set three, but a 5-0 run gave Union the lead, never to trail again in the match.
Meghan Delaney led with 13 kills while
Jordan Vick dished out 20 assists.
Abbie Rahn and Delaney posted 14 and 10 digs respectively. Delaney led with three aces, while
Emily Grace Calhoon,
Kristen Bukowsky, and
Grace Roberts led with four blocks each. Union dominated the net, out-blocking KWC 9-0 in the match. KWC had more kills that Union, 32-27.
In the win over Maryville, Union scored first again in all three sets. Union jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set, 5-2 lead in the second set, and a 7-0 lead in the third set. Union did not trail in the first set. The second set had 10 lead changes and 13 ties. Maryville had set point at 24-23, but Union scored three straight to get the win. Kills from Delaney and Bukosky book-ended a block from Vick and Bukoswky to seal the win. After the 7-0 start, Union led by as many as 14-3 in the third set, cruising to the match victory. Delaney led with 22 kills and Vick with 36 blocks. Calhoon led with four blocks, and Delaney led with 13 digs.
Up next for Union is the third and final match in the CBU Classic, Saturday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m. versus Lynn University.
