JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Spring Hill College in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. Union improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the GSC. Spring Hill dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
On a night when Union honored its six seniors, the Lady Bulldogs posted their first shutout since October 15, 2017 (2-0 vs. UAH). It was also the first three goal performance since September 22 of the same year (4-1 vs. Shorter).
Head coach
Scott Sinclair said, "The girls stuck with out game plan. After a rough time last season, we've been practicing, a lot, working on how we can utilize our strengths. The seniors are a huge part of that, and bringing in freshman and to join the sophomores and juniors, I feel we are all connected right now."
Freshman
Holly Trisdale scored the first two goals for Union, both coming in the first half. Senior
Brooke Watson assisted Trisdale in the 19th minute for the game-winner to put Union up 1-0.
Kirstie Jackson assisted Trisdale's second goal in the 35th minute to put Union up 2-0, a lead they held at the half. Union out-shot Spring Hill 7-5 in the first 45 minutes.
Another freshman,
Iris Seamster, tacked on a third goal for Union in the 69th minute, assisted by Watson.
Union out-shot Spring Hill 16-10 in the match, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Seamster led Union with three shots, while four different players had two shots each.
Rylee Iorio had one save in the first half in 45 minutes of play in net.
Anna Venckus handled preserved the shutout with two saves in her 45 minutes of second half work in net.
Up next for Union is a matchup with NCAA D2 No. 13 West Florida, September 29 at 1 p.m. at Union.
