JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team fell 8-7 to Trevecca Nazarene University at Fesmire Field Tuesday night. Union dropped to 9-23 overall, while Trevecca Nazarene improved to 14-13.
Trevecca Nazarene wasted no time in getting the first punch of the game. The Trojans used a leadoff walk, a hit-and-run single, followed by a 2-RBI double to take a 2-0 lead all with no outs. Union starter
Logan Portis settled in and recorded three straight outs, including a strikeout to end the inning.
Union answered in the bottom of the first with
Nolen Milton's fifth home run of the year, a solo shot to right field. After
Caleb DeMarigny singled,
Josh Frantz hit an RBI double to tie the game.
Union scored again in the bottom of the second when DeMarigny's two-RBI single with the bases loaded gave the Bulldogs their first lead, 4-2. Union added to its lead in the third when
Josh Frantz scored on a wild pitch.
After neither team scored in the fourth, Trevecca stopped Union's five unanswered runs with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single. TNU tied the game in the sixth, chasing Portis from the game in favor of
Spencer Woods for Union. TNU then took the lead for the first time since the first inning with a two-RBI double in the top of the eighth.
Kory Pollard then entered the game for Woods in relief for Union. The Trojans added a third run of the inning to extend their lead to 8-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Union scored twice to pull to within a run. Two hit-by-pitches and a couple of errors led to the runs for the Bulldogs. Union went in order in the bottom of the ninth.
A
Zane Phillips single in the sixth was the only hit for Union after the second inning.
Milton led Union with two hits. DeMarigny led with two RBI. Portis started and went five innings, allowing five runs with three strikeouts and four walks in the no decision. Woods (3-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work. Pollard tossed the last 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Up next for Union will be a weekend home series versus GSC league leader West Florida.
