JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team defeated No. 10 University of West Florida 9-6 Friday evening at Fesmire Field. The Bulldogs improved to 4-15 in the Gulf South Conference and 10-23 on the season. The Argonauts dropped 15-4 in conference play and 25-11 on the season.
West Florida scored its first run in the second inning. A sacrifice fly gave UWF its second run in the fourth. Robert Lopez hit a home run over the center field wall to add another run for West Florida in the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles in the seventh scored two more runs for the Argonauts, pulling ahead 5-0.
Daniel Floyd, the starter for UWF allowed just one hit with eight strikeouts through six innings of work.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, Union exploded with two outs and a runner on base to take the lead with six runs.
Tyler Thomas got Union on the board with a 3-run home run, the first of this career. Union got four more hits in the inning, capped by a 2-run single from
Josh Bozoian to put Union up 6-5.
In the eighth, Union added three more runs. A 2-RBI single from
Dacoda Stone, followed by an RBI single from
Nolen Milton, both with two outs, gave Union some insurance.
Brandon Maxwell tossed six innings for the Bulldogs, giving up three runs off of six hits with three walks.
Cooper Bullough (1-1) took the win for the Bulldogs after tossing one inning in relief for the Bulldogs, giving up two hits off of three runs with two walks.
Walker Adkisson (2) recorded the save for Union after tossing two innings, giving up one run off of two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Union was led by Stone, Milton, and Bozian with two hits each, while Stone and Thomas led with three RBI each.
Union and West Florida will continue the three game series, Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
