JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted its second straight mid-week shutout with an 8-0 victory over Henderson State University. Union improved to 12-28 overall, while Henderson State drops to 19-20.
This win for Union snapped a four-game winning streak for HSU over Union with the last win for Union coming at home in 2017. HSU defeated Union twice already this season, both on the road.
Union opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, then added runs in each the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to lead 7-0. A final run was added in the eighth.
In the first
Josh Bozoian drove in
Nolen Milton with a single to left field. In the third, it was Bozoian again, this time a 2-RBI single put Union up 3-0.
Hayden Lewis hit is third home run of the season, a solo shot deep over the right field fence to give Union a 4-0 lead after four innings. In the fifth, a sacrifice fly by
Jesse Kelley and a bases loaded walk to
Zane Phillips gave Union a 6-0 lead. Union tacked on an unearned run in the sixth on a groundout RBI by
Josh Frantz. Frantz came through in his next at-bat with an RBI double in the eighth to drive in the eighth run of the game for the Bulldogs.
Union starter
Logan Portis (2-6) went the first five innings, allowing no runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Ryan Metts tossed a perfect sixth in relief, while
Scott Shearer did the same in the seventh with a strikeout.
Walker Adkisson tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs, while giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and getting two strikeouts.
Up next for Union will be another mid-week non-conference game at home versus UT Martin April 17 at 6 p.m.
