JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team lost 7-2 to the University of Tennessee Martin. Union dropped to 12-29 overall, while UT Martin improved to 14-22 on the season.
UT Martin swept the season series with Union, winning 8-3 back in March at Martin.Â
The two teams did a lot of scoring early. UT Martin put up a 3-spot in the first and two more in the second. Union added single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings.Â
Union got on the board in the first on an RBI single from Spencer Shultz, driving in
Nolen Milton. In the second, it was a sacrifice fly from
Caleb DeMarigny driving in
Charlie Ellis to set the score at 5-2 Skyhawks.Â
Neither team score again until UT Martin added a run in the seventh to extend its lead to 6-2. The Skyhawks added to the lead in the eighth with their seventh run of the night.
UT Martin outhit Union 10-8 in the game. Union left seven men on base, whle the Skyhawks stranded six. UTM turned two double plays, to just one for the Bulldogs.
Cooper Bullough (1-2) started for Union, tossing four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with a strikeout and no walks in the loss.
Sam McMillin entered to start the fifth, tossing 2.1 innings of relief, allowing a run on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts.
Luis Larrinaga entered in relief in the top of the seventh with an out and a runner on. Larrinaga tossed 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with a walk.
Owen Bartholomew tossed a perfect ninth inning, recording two of the outs himself on hotshot come-backers.Â
Jefferey O'Doherty (1-1) earned the win in relief, giving up no runs on one hit in 2.1 innings. Seth Petry started for the Skyhawks, tossing 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. UTM used eight pitchers in the game.Â
Up next for Union will be a weekend GSC series at West Georgia, starting Friday, April 19 at 4 p.m. central time.Â
