Five home runs highlight Union softball's sweep over TNU

Parker Davis earns win in both games

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Trevecca Nazarene University Wednesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 7-4 and then took the second game 8-2. Union improved to 19-12 overall, while Trevecca dropped to 13-8 on the season. 

Union combined for five home runs in the double-header, including three in the first game. Kaitlyn Kelley hit two home runs in game one, while Haley Barnette hit one in each game. Peyton Mathis got in on the home run derby with a solo shot in the second game. 

In game one, Trevecca scored first with run in the first. Union responded with three runs in the bottom of the firs to take the lead. The Lady Bulldogs never trailed for the remainder of the day. Kelley's first home run came in the fifth, then followed in the sixth with her second homer of the day, both solo shots. For a moment, she passed Barnette for the team lead with home runs with eight. Barnette then followed Kelley's second homer with a solo shot of her own to tie Kelley at eight homers for the season. Parker Davis (6-6) earned the win for Union, tossing the first five innings, and then coming back in for the seventh inning. She allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work. Gabby Morris tossed one inning of relief. Kelley led Union with three hits and two RBI in game one. TNU outhit Union 8-7 in the loss. 

Game two was more offensive output for the Lady Bulldogs. Union scored two runs in the first and two more in the second. TNU's only two runs came in the third inning on back-to-back solo home runs with two outs. Union added three runs in the fourth and one in the six to run away with the 8-2 victory. Union pounded out 12 hits in the win, allowing only four for TNU. Following a diving catch in the top of the second inning by Mathis, she led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot. Barnette had a monster second game going 3-for-3 with five RBI. She had a 2-RBI double in the first, a bases loaded walk, RBI in the second, an RBI single in the fourth, and a solo home run that put her back in the team lead with nine homers for the season. Sarah Smith walked all four times she came to the plate in game two. Davis earned the win in game two also, tossing the final 4.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and a walk. The only hit she allowed in relief came with two outs in the seventh inning. Taylor Manley started the game, tossing 2.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout. 

Up next for Union is a weekend series at Shorter University March 23-24.
