ROME, Ga. – The Union University softball team posted a double-header sweep at Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union won the first game 6-3 and took game two 10-7. Union improved to 21-12 overall and 8-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 14-16 on the season and 7-9 in league play.
The win for Union was its fourth straight and 11
th win in the last 14 games.
Shorter scored first in game one with run in the bottom of the first. That score held until Union scored twice in the fifth.
Harley Bartholomew tripled in
Peyton Mathis, followed by an RBI ground out from
Alyssa Ward. Union scored again in the sixth on
Haley Barnette's 10
th home run of the season. Shorter tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. However, Union's
Gabby Morris hit a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh to give Union the lead and eventual 6-3 win.
Gabby Morris earned the win, while
Parker Davis got the save. Union had seven hits from seven different players. Morris' three RBI led the way.
Game two was dominated by the offenses for both teams, combining for 17 runs and 24 hits. Union scored two runs in the first on a 2-RBI single from
Sarah Smith. Shorter tied the game in the bottom of the first. Union took a 4-2 lead after single runs in the second and third innings. Shorter took a 6-4 lead in the third inning with four runs. A Morris home run and a
Kaitlyn Kelley 2-RBI single in the fifth gave Union a 7-6 lead. Shorter tied the game in the fifth. Union took the lead for good in the sixth with three runs. Bartholomew had an RBI single while Ward drove in two runs on a ground ball error.
Taylor Manley started for Union and was relieved by Morris in the first. Davis earned the win after relieving Morris with 4.1 innings of relief. Eight players record a hit for Union led by Smith with three hits. Ward led with three RBI.
Up next for Union is the series finale March 24 at Shorter.
