ROME, Ga. – The Union University softball team posted a 7-1 victory at Shorter University to complete the 3-game series sweep. Union improved to 22-12 on the season and 9-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 14-17 overall and 7-10 in league play.
Union has moved into fourth place in the GSC standings with five series left in the season.
The win for Union was its fifth straight victory and 12th in the last 15 games. It also secured the second GSC series sweep of the season, both coming on the road (at DSU Feb. 24-25). The two GSC sweeps this year is the first time for this feat since 2015 when Union swept CBU and UWG, both at home.
For the second time in the series, Shorter scored first in a game with a run in the second inning. Union tied the game in the top of the fourth with
Haley Barnette's 11th home run of the season. Union took the lead in the fifth on an
Alyssa Ward RBI grounder. Freshman
Kaitlyn Kelley then put Union in control with a three run home run in the seventh. The five-run seven for Union was capped with RBI doubles from both
Parker Davis and
Gabby Morris. Davis (8-6) went the distance for Union in the circle, earning her second win of the series. She allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Union pounded out 11 hits led by
Harley Bartholomew, Barnette, and Davis with two each. Kelley led with three RBI.
Up next for Union will be a road non-conference double-header at Mississippi College, Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
