No. 22 Mississippi College tops Union softball

CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University softball team lost at No. 22 Mississippi College Wednesday afternoon. Union lost 8-0 in six innings in game two. Union dropped to 22-12 on the season, while Mississippi College improved to 23-8 overall.

The first game was played under protest by Union. With Union leading 3-2 in the game, a substitution by Union was denied by the umpire. The protest was ruled in favor of Union and the game was considered "no contest" as this was not a conference game and no makeup date could be secured. The stats of the game (MC 11, UU 8) will still counted for the teams, however, no result (W/L) will be recorded for either team or either pitcher.

The game did not count as Gulf South Conference games despite being a GSC opponent.

In game one, Union scored first with two runs in the second. With Union down 5-3 after four innings, the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the fifth. MC scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to lead 11-5. Union rallied with three runs in the seventh but it was not enough. Union outhit MC 11-10 in the game. Haley Barnette, Gabby Morris, and Peyton Mathis led with two hits each. Morris and Mathis led with two RBI each. Morris had the team's only home run, her sixth of the season. Parker Davis (8-7) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Morris and Ashley Graves also pitched for Union.

Game two went to MC as well with a run in the first, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the game early. MC outhit Union 5-3. Three different players added one hit each including Harley Bartholomew, Kaitlyn Kelley, and Morris. Morris (8-7) took the loss, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with one strikeout and four walks. Graves and Taylor Manley also pitched for Union.

Up next for Union is a weekend GSC home series versus West Alabama.
