JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted an 88-60 win over Fisk University at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 5-3 overall, while Fisk dropped to 2-11 on the season.
Union opened the game with an 8-0 run, put together by a layup from
Terrandus Smith and a pair of 3-pointers from the reigning GSC Freshman of the Week,
Cooper Meadows. By the first media timeout, the Union lead was cut to 13-10. Union quickly worked the lead to double figures for the first time in the game, 23-13, following a 3-pointer from
Samory Gueye. A layup from
LiDonta Hicks-Gentry gave Union its largest lead of the first half, 29-15, with just over 10 minutes to play. Fisk, however, rallied back again to cut the Union lead to 34-30 with 4:32 left. Neither team scored for almost two minutes until Union's
Tylandrius Parks hit his second 3-pointer of the night. A 3-pointer from
Payton Stovall helped push Union's lead to 41-32 at the half.
Union was 9-of-19 for 47 percent from 3-point range in the first half with six different players hitting from long range. Eight different Union players scored in the first half with none reaching double figures.
In the second half, Fisk cut the Union lead down to four points. Union then went on an 11-0 run to lead 52-37 with 17: 44 left. Three 3-pointers from three different Union players sparked the run. Union kept building a lead and following Meadows' fifth 3-pointer of the night, Union led 66-50 with nine minutes left. Union's largest lead of the night came as the 88-60 final.
Union was led by Meadows with a career high 19 points including 5-of-9 shooting from long range. Hicks-Gentry added 15 points, Parks added 14 points and
Samory Gueye scored 13 points. Hicks-Gentry completed a double-double 13 rebounds. Stovall added eight assists. Union shot 52 percent from the field, 48 percent (15-31) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (17-30) from the free throw line.
Fisk was led by Odell Brandon with 17 points and Addison Miller with 11 points. Fisk shot 35 percent from the field, 18 percent (4-22), and 62 percent (8-13) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a non-conference home game, Saturday, December 7 at 4 p.m. versus McKendree University.
