JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 95-35 win over the University of West Florida Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 4-2 on the season, while West Florida dropped to 22-3 overall. This was the GSC opener for both teams.
Union quickly ran out to a 16-2 lead to start the game capped by a 3-pointer from freshman
Leah Cauble. Union led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter before taking the 23-7 lead at the end of one period. Union led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter and held a 23-point advantage, 43-20 at the break.
In the second half, Union continued to shoot well, pushing the lead to as many as 41 in the third quarter. A layup with 40 seconds left in the game gave Union its largest lead of the night at 60, 95-35.
Union held West Florida to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters, with the only exception being 13 in the second quarter. Union scored at least 20 points in each quarter, with the best quarter being 29-7 in the fouth.
Union shot 57 percent from the field and 57 percent (16-28) from 3-point range. Union hit 15-19 free throws for 79 percent.
All 11 players scored for Union, including Cauble with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting from long range. Jalencia Williams and Keili Robinson added 10 points each. Willilams,
Jada Smith, and
Caroline Hogue led with seven rebounds each and
Sadie Knee led with seven assists.
West Florida was led by Rachel McCree with 10 points. The Argos shot 22 percent from the field, 16 percent (4-25) from 3-point range, and 56 percent (9-18) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a second straight GSC home game, Monday, November 25 versus Valdosta State University at 5:30 p.m.
