No. 24/23 Union women earn second straight double-figure GSC win, 68-52 over VSU

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 68-52 win over Valdosta State University Monday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union, ranked No. 24 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 23 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. 

Neither team scored for the first 3:05 of the game before Union's Jalencia Williams put Union up 2-0 with a layup. Two free throws from Williams and then back-to-back 3-pointers from Jacie Higgins and Emily Beard put Union up 10-0 to start the game. 

The first quarter was the difference as Union outscored VSU 24-9 in the first 10 minutes of play. The rest of the game was played even with Union edging VSU 44-43 over the final three quarters. 

The Blazers got as close as seven points in the second quarter, but Union pushed out to a 37-23 lead at the break. 

Union extended its lead to a game-high 19 points in the third quarter, 52-33, at the 3:06 mark. Union maintained its 14 point lead from the half, 55-41, at the end of the third quarter. Union maintained the large lead for the rest of the game, going back up by as many as 18 points several times, before taking the 68-52 final. 

Union was led by Jada Smith with 19 points and five assists. Caroline Hogue played her best game as a Lady Bulldog with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both season highs. It was the 12th double-double of her career. Eight different players score for Union, including five with eight or more points. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 46 percent (6-13) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (12-21) from the free throw line. 

Valdosta State was led by Kayla Bonilla with 17 points. Nari Garner and Cheray Saunders added 11 points each. The Blazers shot 29 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) form long-range, and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line. 

Union will be off for a week for the Thanksgiving Break and will return to action at home, Monday, December 2 versus Fisk at 6 p.m.
