Jackson, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 80-62 win over Rust College in the regular season home opener.
Union was still just outside the top-25 at No. 26 in the coaches' poll and was No. 20 in the media poll.Â
Rust jumped out to a 6-2 lead but Union caught up and never looked back. A layup from newcomer Jalencia Williams started the game. Union was up 24-14 at the end of the first quarter. Union extended its lead to as many as 17 points, 47-30 in the second quarter and took that into the half.
In the third quarter, Union's offense was too much and the third quarter ended at 61-44. In the fourth quarter Union reached their largest lead of the game at 25 points by an
Emily Beard three pointer, it made the score 69-44. The game would come to a close at 80-62.
Union was led by
Jada Smith with 21 points. Williams went for 17 points. Williams added 4 rebounds in the game.
Emily Beard came in close behind with 14 points and Beard with 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range for 12 points. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 44 percent (8-18) from long range.
