LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated University of West Alabama 71-48 on Saturday night. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 15-1 overall and 7-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Tigers dropped to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in league play.
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead early, ending the first quarter 18-11. Union started the second quarter with an 8-2 run, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 14 point lead. The Tigers closed the gap to eight points, but Union ended the first half in lead at 35-23. At the 4:23 mark in the third quarter, West Alabama went on a 11-2 run, but Union ended the third quarter up 51-42. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 20-6 in the fourth quarter, giving Union the largest lead of the game at 25 points with three minutes left. The final score was 71-48.
Union was led by Morgan Martin with 15 points and 11 rebounds, making this her sixth double-double for this season. Jada Smith had 14 points, and Tiffany Rechis added in 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs were 44 percent from the field, 30 percent (8-26) from long range, and 84 percent (11-13) from the foul line.
West Alabama was led by Bria Dent with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and J'nyiah Daniels with 10 points. The Tigers were 32 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from three-point range, and 71 percent (10-14) from the foul line.
West Alabama out-rebounded Union 37-34. Union committed 17 turnovers, forcing 23 from UWA.
Next up for Union is a pair of home games, first is against Delta State on Thursday night and Mississippi College on Saturday.
