JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 25-27, 25-19) to the University of Montevallo. Union dropped to 3-12 on the season and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Montevallo waisted no time in taking control in the first two sets. The Falcons hit .333 and .440 in the first two sets, topping Union 25-16 and 25-13.
In the third set, Montevallo jumped up early and led 16-8 midway through the set, looking for the sweep. But Union kept fighting an 11-2 run, Union led 19-18. The set was back and forth until Montevallo again had Union on the ropes at match point, 25-24. Union scored the final three points, getting blocks from Christa Karns and Delaney Peterson, followed by a kill from Peterson and a set-winning ace from Meghan Delaney.
In the fourth set, Montevallo held a slim lead over Union until a 7-4 run pushed the Falcons up 20-14. Union could not recover and fell 25-19.
Delaney led Union with 10 kills. Rebecca Sexton led with 24 assists, Delaney and Claressa Kohler led with two aces, Peterson led with five blocks, and Anna Claire Winchester led with 13 digs.
Up next for Union will be the final of eight straight home matches, hosting Alabama Huntsville at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 15.
