JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team was swept in weekend series against No. 5 Delta State University. Delta State won the first game on Saturday 12-6. The Statesmen won the first game of the double-header Sunday 4-3 and the second game 13-3. The Bulldogs are now 11-26 overall and 6-15 in the GSC. The Statesmen are now 28-6 overall and 17-3 in conference play.
Delta State scored first off a sacrifice fly ball in the first inning. Union answered in the bottom of the second with an RBI from Charlie Ellis. An RBI from David Robins in the third scored Union's second run. The Statesmen scored three more runs in the fourth, going up 4-2. It was in the sixth inning that Delta State exploded with seven runs to jump up 11-2 on Union. Delta State scored another run in the top of the seventh, and Union finished by scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame, including a 2-run home run from Robins. Robins and Nolen Milton led Union with three hits each, Robins with three RBI. JR Miller (4-4) took the loss for the Bulldogs after tossing 5.1 innings, giving up 10 earned runs and eight hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Kory Pollard tossed 3.2 innings only giving up one run off four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Delta State scored a run in the first inning that was answered by two runs from Union in the bottom of the frame. Chase Diggs had an RBI in the second inning to increase the score 3-1 for Union. Delta State scored a run in both the third inning and fourth inning to tie the ball game, 3-3. It was in the 10th inning that Delta State was able to score the winning run. Spencer Schultz led Union with three hits. Diggs, Schultz and Milton each had an RBI. Marty Coursey tossed nine innings for the Bulldogs giving up 12 hits and three runs with five walks and seven strikeouts. Skyler Harrison (2-6) pitched one inning giving up two hits and one run with one walk and one strikeout.
Delta State started the third game with a run in the first inning. Caleb DeMarigny scored in the bottom of the second to put Union on the board. The Statesmen hit a two run homerun in the top of the third that was answered by a two run homerun for Union from Josh Bozoian. Delta State took control of the rest of the game by scoring four runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and their final run in the seventh. Eli Thibado, Robins, Milton and Bozoian each had a hit for Union. Scott Shearer (4-7) tossed 5.2 innings giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Brady Cook pitched 1.1 innings giving up two hits and one earned run with two walks and one strike out.
