MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Union University baseball team defeated No. 16 University of Arkansas at Monticello 23-15, Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 12-26. Monticello dropped to 26-10.
Hayden Lewis started the game for the Bulldogs with a home run over the right field fence. Later in the inning, an RBI from Caleb DeMarigny put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Monticello answered with a home run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Union scored five more runs in the second inning including a 3-run double from David Robins. Monticello scored in two runs in the bottom of the second on a homer to right center. Union exploded for nine runs in the top of the third including a two run homer from Lewis and a grand slam from Eli Thibado, the first of his career. Monticello also had a big inning in the third, a 2-run double and a 3-run home run kept the Weevils in the game. Union did not score in the fourth but Monticello scored three more runs to cut the deficit to 16-10. A sacrifice fly from Robins put Union up 17-10. Monticello hit a home run in each the fifth and sixth innings. A sacrifice fly scored another run for Monticello in the sixth inning to come within three runs of Union, 17-14. A home run from Robins in the seventh scored three more runs for Union. Monticello scored their final run in the bottom of the frame. Chase Diggs hit a line drive through the left side to score two more runs for the Bulldogs. Josh Bozoian drove in the final run for Union with a single up the middle in the top of the ninth.
Diggs and Lewis led for Union with four hits each. Robins led Union with seven RBI in the game, just two shy of his teammate Nolen Milton's record of nine RBI in a game. Lewis added four RBI and two home runs. Brady Cook started for the Bulldogs pitching 2.2 innings giving up seven hits and eight earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Skyler Harrison tossed 2.1 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs with three walks and one strikeout. Kory Pollard (1-1) earned the win in for relief, tossing 4.0 innings giving up two hits and one earned run with five walks and two strikeouts.
Up next for Union is a three game conference series against the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Ala. starting Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
