Union baseball loses three at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University baseball team was swept in the series against West Alabama this weekend. West Alabama won the first game on Sunday, 9-1. The Tigers won the first game of the double-header Monday 6-5 and the second game 5-4. The Bulldogs are now 12-29 overall and 6-18 in the GSC. West Alabama improved to 16-21 and 11-12 in the GSC. 

Union was the first to put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when Chase Diggs singled to center field, scoring in Eli Thibado. West Alabama scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers scored two more runs off a 2-run homer to left field. The bats kept swinging in the bottom of the seventh for West Alabama, scoring three more runs. The Tigers last run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth.

Union was led by Diggs with two hits and one RBI. JR Miller (4-5) took the loss with six innings pitched, giving up six earned runs on ten hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Brady Cook pitched 2.0 innings in relief for the Bulldogs giving up three hits and one earned run with three srtikeouts. 

West Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to start the ball game. Union's first run on the game came in the top of the fourth off a RBI single by Charlie Ellis. The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth. Spencer Schultz had a two RBI single, David Robins and Jesse Kelley scored in the top of the seventh. Union's closed the gap in the top of the eighth on a double by Thibado, bringing in Ellis. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the ninth when Tyler Thomas scored off a wild pitch. The Tigers won in the bottom of the eleventh off a single to third base.

Union was led by Robins, Phillips, and Ellis all with two hits. Scott Shearer took the loss, tossing 8.1 innings. Shearer (4-8) gave up one earned run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Marty Coursey started the ball game for Union pitching 2.0 innings and giving up four hits and four earned runs with two walks and one strikeout. Skyler Harrison pitched .1 innings in relief giving up two hits with one strikeout. 

Union scored off a RBI single by Robins in the top of the first. West Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the second to go back on top. The Bulldogs took back the lead in the top of the fifth. Hayden Lewis brought in Diggs off a double to left field, and Lewis scored off a wild pitch. West Alabama took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. Union's final run of the game came from a RBI double from Robins.

Union was led by Lewis and Robins both with two hits. Robins also had two RBI. Harrison (2-7)  took the loss with six innings pitched, giving up four earned runs and nine hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. 

Next up for Union is an away game at the University of Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday, April 17 at 4 p.m.
