MARTIN, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted a 15-11 win at the University of Tennessee Martin Tuesday night. Union improved to 13-29 on the season, while UT Martin dropped to 5-29 overall.
UT Martin scored first with a run in the first inning. The Skyhawks scored at least one run in a each of the first seven innings and eight of the nine innings on the night. In six of those innings, UT Martin settled for just one run. Union used three big innings to get the win.
Union responded to the 1-0 early deficit with four runs in the top of the second.
Caleb DeMarigny and Chase Digs had RBI singles, surrounded a 2-run single from
Charlie Ellis. After UTM tied the game with a run in the second and two more in the third, Union got five more in the fifth. Diggs and
Zane Phillips added RBI singles while
Spencer Schultz added a sacrifice fly. By the end of the seventh innings, UTM had cut Union's lead down to just 9-8. Union added a run in the top of the eighth on a single from
David Robins. The bottom of the eighth was the only inning UTM did not score. Union seemed to put the game away with five runs in the ninth to lead 15-8. Diggs hit a 2-run single, followed by an RBI double from
Hayden Lewis. Robbins capped the scoring with a 2-RBI double. UTM added three runs on a 3-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Union held on for the 15-11 win.
Kory Pollard got the start, tossing four innings, allowing six run on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
JD Fuzzell (1-0) got the win, tossing 2.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs, one earned on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Brady Cook (1) earned the save with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Ellis led Union with four hits, while Diggs added three hits. four other Bulldogs had at least two hits as Union outhit UTM 18-17. Diggs led with four RBI, while Robins drove in three runs.
Up next for Union will be the final home games of the season in a weekend GSC series versus Alabama Huntsville, April 21-22.
