JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team lost game one 6-2 to the University of Alabama in Huntsville Friday night, but swept UAH in the double-header Saturday, 13-5 and 5-2. Union took the series and improved to 15-30 on the season and 8-19 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 22-20 overall and 11-14 in conference play.
Alabama Huntsville started the first game on Saturday with a home run over the right field wall. A sacrifice fly to right field scored another run in the first for Huntsville. Another sacrifice fly scored Huntsville's third run in the top of the third. A single from Caleb DeMarigny in the fourth scored Union's first run. Charlie Ellis followed DeMarigny with a 2-run RBI to tie the game. A home run from UAH in the fourth put the Chargers up one run. The Bulldogs jumped ahead in the fifth inning 7-4 with a 2-run homer from Zane Phillips and an RBI double from DeMarigny. Hayden Lewis scored in the bottom of the sixth off a wild pitch. Another home run from Phillips drove in two runs followed by a 2-run homer from DeMarigny. Huntsville scored their final run in the eighth inning and Phillips hit his third home run in three consecutive at bats to give Union a 13-5 victory. Union was led by Phillips with four hits and five RBI with three home runs. Marty Coursey (1-3) pitched five innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts. Brady Cook received the save for the Bulldogs pitching four innings giving up four hits and one earned run with one strikeout.
In the final game of the series Huntsville scored first in the top of the frame. Phillips reached first base by an error from the third baseman which also allowed Union's first run. DeMarigny followed with a two RBI single and Eli Thibado scored the last run of the inning on an RBI from Spencer Schultz. Huntsville scored another run in the second inning. Lewis finished the scoring in the game in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple to score Union's fifth run. Four players each led with a hit a piece. DeMarigny led Union with two RBI. Skyler Harrison (3-7) pitched five innings for the Bulldogs giving up five hits and two earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Scott Shearer pitched two innings in relief with one strikeout.
Huntsville won the first game of the series Friday night, 6-2. Union scored two runs early in the first as Lewis hit a 2-run homer to left field. Huntsville scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game. Huntsville scored four runs in the sixth inning, three from a home run over the left field wall. Union was led by Chase Diggs and Jesse Kelley with two hits each and Lewis with two RBI. JR Miller threw a complete game pitching nine innings giving up seven hits and six earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Up next for Union is Harding University in Searcy, Ark. on Tuesday, April 24 at 2 p.m.
