MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University softball team swept LeMoyne Owen in their double header Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Magicians 8-0 in the first game and 12-1 in the second game. The Lady Bulldogs are now 14-23 on the season. LeMoyne Owen dropped to 2-22.
Peyton Mathis' single to left field scored Union's first run of the game. A double to left field from
Kristen Pickens scored two more runs for Union in the top of the second inning. Mathis was able to hit Pickens in shortly after to make the score, 4-0. Union scored two more runs in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Mathis doubled to left field to score Union's last two runs of the game.
Union was led by
Emily Bennett with three hits and
Peyton Mathis led with four RBI.
Gabby Morris pitched a complete game giving up only two hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts in six innings.
A sacrifice fly to right field from
Molly McKelvy scored Union's first run of the second game in the second inning.
Taylor Manley doubled to right field to score another run shortly after. In the third inning Morris got the bats rolling with a triple to right field to score a run and McKelvy followed with a home run to bring in Morris. LeMoyne Owen was able to score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning that would be their only run of the day. McKelvy hit an RBI triple and then scored off a bunt laid down by
Abbie Page. McKelvy tripled again in the top of the seventh to bring in another run. The Lady Bulldogs would end the night off a 3-run home run from Bennett.
Union was led by Bennett and Morris with four hits each. Bennett and McKelvy each had a home run, McKelvy with two triples and five RBI.
Taylor Manley took the win for the Lady Bulldogs tossing 6.0 innings giving up three hits and one earned run with one walk and five strikeouts.
Ashley Graves pitched in relief for one inning giving up no hits and no runs with one strikeout.
Up next for Union is a double header against Rhodes College at home on Thursday, April 12 starting at 6 p.m.
