Union baseball drops series finale to VSU 9-4

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team fell 9-4 to Valdosta State University Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. The two teams spilt the Friday double header. Union dropped to 10-19 on the season and 5-10 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 12-16 overall and 6-9 in league play.
 
VSU scored two in the first inning to take the early lead that the Blazers did not give up. Both team scored a run in the third inning. Union's Hayden Lewis got his team's first hit, a triple to left center field. Chase Diggs followed with a sacrifice fly to put Union on the board. Valdosta State added three more runs in the fourth inning and two in the in fifth to jump out to an 8-1 lead. Charlie Ellis drove in a run for Union in the sixth, followed by a Lewis home run in the seventh to cut the deficit down to 8-3. Dalton Murray homered for the Blazers in the eighth to make the score 9-3. Union added a run in the ninth on a single by Tyler Thomas to set the final at 9-4.
 
Union was by Hayden Lewis with a 4-for-4 day including three runs, a solo home run, and two triples. No other Bulldog had more than one hit.
 
Marty Coursey (0-2) took the loss for Union, going 3.1 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk. Luis Larrinaga, Brady Cook, and Kory Pollard tossed the final 5.2 innings of work in relief. Cooper Cain (3-1) earned the win, going eight innings with three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks. He allowed just two hits through five innings, both triples to Union's Lewis.
 
Up next for Union will be a home non-conference game, Tuesday, March 27 versus Arkansas-Monticello at 2 p.m.
