Union baseball rallies for DH split over Valdosta State

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University Bulldogs split a double-header versus the Valdosta State University Blazers Friday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Valdosta State won the first game 13-3. Union took game two 4-3 to earn the split. The Bulldogs improved to 10-18 on the season and 5-9 in the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers are now 11-16 overall and 5-9 in conference play. 

Union rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The game was scoreless until the third inning when Valdosta State scored three runs on back-to-back home runs. In the fifth inning, Union got on the board with a Chase Diggs 2-run home run to left-center, his first homer of the season. In the sixth Zane Phillips hit a line drive to right field to tie the game at 3-3. Jesse Kelley singled to left to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Thomas pinch-ran for Kelley. He moved to third on a single by Diggs. With two outs, Nolan Milton earned an intentional walk to load the bases. With Caleb DeMarigny at the play, Thomas scored Union's winning run on a wild pitch. Union had eight hits in the ball game, Diggs led with two hits and two RBI, including a home run. JR Miller (3-3) went the distance for the Bulldogs, giving up seven hits and three runs with four walks and four strikeouts. 

The Blazers took control of the first game scoring eight runs in the first inning. An RBI from Spencer Shultz gave Union a run on the bottom of the frame. Valdosta State scored again in the third making it 9-1. The Bulldogs scored their final two runs in the fourth with an RBI from both Charlie Ellis and Hayden Lewis. Valdosta State finished the ball game scoring three runs in the fifth and their last run in the seventh to win the run-ruled shorted game. The Bulldogs had eight hits in the game, David Robins and Ellis each led with two hits. Scott Shearer (4-5) started for the Bulldogs pitching one-third inning and giving up eight runs on eight hits with one walk. Sam McMillin tossed 4.2 innings giving up four hits and four runs with three walks and one strikeout. JD Fuzzell finished the ball game pitching 2.0 innings giving up one hit with one run.

Up next for the Bulldogs is their final game against Valdosta State Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
