JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team defeated Lee University in the last game of the three game weekend series at Fesmire Field. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-13 on the season and 4-10 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee dropped to 14-16 overall and 6-9 in conference play.
The two teams split the double-header Saturday afternoon.
Lee got an early lead on Union, scoring two runs in the first inning. Union was quick to answer with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
Emily Bennett walked with the bases loaded for the first RBI, followed by
Gabby Morris scoring on a passed ball.
Ashten Petty then roped a 2-RBI double to left to give Union a 4-2 lead. The next two innings went three up three down for both teams. Lee scored four runs in the fourth to go up, 6-4. The Lady Bulldogs battled back again in the bottom half of the frame. An RBI from both
Kristen Pickens and
Sarah Smith tied the game, 6-6. In the fifth inning,
Peyton Mathis doubled to right field, driving in Lexi Bates for Union's winning run.
Union out hit Lee 9-6 in the game.
Gabby Morris led with three hits and
Ashten Petty led with two RBI.
Taylor Griffith tossed 3.1 innings giving up three earned runs with one walk. Morris (6-5) came in for relief and pitched 3.2 innings giving up one earned run with one walk and four strike outs.
Up next for Union is a double header against Harding University Wednesday, March 21 starting at 2 p.m. This double-header was recently added to the schedule.
