Union baseball tops Lee 5-4 in series finale

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team won the final game of a three game series 5-4 over Lee University. Lee edged Union in the first two games 3-0 and 7-8 Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union is now 8-17 on the season and 4-8 in conference play. Lee dropped to 12-14 overall and 6-6 in conference. 
 
Lee scored a run in the first inning and held the Bulldogs scoreless until the fourth inning when Caleb DeMarigny scored on a ground out from Charlie Ellis. A two run homer from Lee in the fifth gave the lead right back to the Flames. But Union responded in the bottom of the frame. Chase Diggs was able to score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2. An RBI single from Diggs in the seventh scored the tying run and a sacrifice fly from Nolen Milton gave Union their first lead of the game, 4-3. In a tense ninth inning, Lee tied the game 4-4 on a sacrifice fly. But again, Union responded. A triple from Hayden Lewis put the winning run on third for Union. David Robins followed with a walk-off single to give Union the win. 
 
Hayden Lewis led Union with three hits and four different players recorded an RBI. Luis Larrinaga (1-0) recorded the win for the Bulldogs, tossing 2.0 innings and only allowing one run. Marty Coursey started the game, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. 
 
In game one of the series Saturday, Lee jumped on Union early in the first game, with a home run over the right field fence. Neither team scored again until the eighth when Lee got two insurance runs. Union had seven hits on the game, DeMarigny led with three. Scott Shearer (4-4) took the loss for Union after pitching 7.1 innings giving up only two earned runs off five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Skyler Harrison tossed 1.2 innings giving up no hits and no runs with one walk. 
 
In game two Saturday, the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the fourth starting with a RBI from Spencer Shultz. Two batters later, Ellis' two run RBI put Union up three. Robins' single to center scored another run in the fifth and in the sixth, Jesse Kelley's double scored in two more runs for Union. Union led 6-0 heading into the final inning of a seven inning game. Lee stormed back with seven runs in the top of the seventh, capped off by a 3-run home run from Howard to put his team up 7-6. Union responded after trailing for the first time in the game. The Bulldog got an RBI single from Shultz tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Diggs crossed the plate. However, Lee scored another run in the eighth and Union could not match it. Union had eight hits in the game, Diggs, Robins, and Shultz each led with two hits. Brady Cook (0-3) took the loss for Union pitching 2.0 innings and giving up one run with one walk and two strikeouts. JR Miller tossed 6.0 innings giving up two earned runs off five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Kory Pollard came in for relief and gave up four runs.
