Union baseball splits Friday double-header versus Maryville

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team split with Maryville University Friday night at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 7-6, and Maryville won the second game 9-5. 

In the first game, JR Miller (2-0) tossed seven innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He tallied five strikeouts and just three walks. JD Fuzzell tossed one-third of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits with no strikeouts. Brady Cook pitched the rest of the inning after Fuzzell, giving up just one hit. Skyler Harrison (1) tossed the final inning for the save, giving up two runs off two hits and had one strike out. Union scored on in the second, one in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth. Maryville rallied late with on in the seventh, three in the eighth, and two in the ninth. But never caught the Bulldogs. Union got eight hits in the game. Chase Diggs and David Robins led with two hits each. Diggs also led with two RBI. Union's big inning came in the seventh as Diggs hit a triple driving two runs and an RBI from Charlie Ellis scored Diggs. 

In the second game, Union jumped up 3-0 in the first inning with the help of doubles from Zane Phillips and Nolen Milton. Spencer Schultz had the third RBI in the first inning. Maryville answered with two in the second inning. Union's Hayden Lewis added two RBI in the third inning, scoring Schultz and Milton. Maryville then scored seven unanswered runs with two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the seventh to lead 9-5. Scott Shearer (1-1) tossed four and a third innings. He allowed eight hits, seven runs and had four strikeouts. Luis Larrinaga tossed 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, one walk, adding two strikeouts. Kory Pollard pitched one inning and allowed one hit, two earned runs, three walks, and had two strike outs. Milton led Union with two hits, while four different players recorded an RBI. 

Union plays Maryville in rubber game of the series, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Union.
