VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University women's soccer team fell 3-1 at Valdosta State University Friday afternoon. Union dropped to 0-11-1 on the season, and 0-9-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 9-5 overall and 7-3 in league play.
Union scored first with a goal from Anna Barkey in the 16th minute. Tiffany Linser helped with the assist on her teammate's third goal of the season. The underclassman duo lead Union in both categories this season. Freshman Barkey leads with three goals, while sophomore Linser leads with two assists.
Union tallied 15 shots in the match, was was the second highest total of the season (27 versus Delta State). The 1-0 lead for Union was also the first lead for Union this season.
Valdosta State tied the match eight minutes later on a goal from Paige Taylor. The score was 1-1 at the half with Valdosta State more than doubling up up Union in shots, 15-7.
The home Blazers tacked on two more goals in the second half. Ashley Lewis scored in the 54th minute and the final goal just moments later in the 57th minute from Riley Tennant.
Union was out shot 28-15 in the match, including 12-8 in shots on goal. Fouls were even at five each, while VSU led in corner kicks 13-3.
Barkey led Union with four shots. Anna Venckus recorded seven saves in her 90 minutes in goal.
Up next for Union is the second match on this GSC road trip, October 21 at West Georgia at noon central time.
Union's final two games of the regular season will be at home, Thursday and Saturday, October 25 and 27 versus Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo respectively.
