Cowan named assistant coach for Union softball

JACKSON, Tenn. - Union University head softball coach Heather Hall has named Sara Cowan as assistant coach for the Lady Bulldogs. Cowan moved into the position after two years as a graduate assistant for Union softball.

Hall said, "Sara did a phenomenal job last year as a graduate assistant. Sara is a humble and hard working coach who not only has a passion for her job but also has a passion to see our student athletes succeed on and off the field. I do not anticipate the transition for Sara from graduate assistant to assistant coach to be a difficult one for her or the team because she has always been fully invested in our program. I am thankful that she will continue with our program for years to come."

Cowan graduated from Union in May 2016 with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Human Studies. She added her M.A.Ed. masters degree in 2017.

Cowan said, "In my time at Union the Lord has definitely opened many doors for me. I never saw myself coaching especially at the collegiate level, but at this point in my life I could not see myself doing anything else. I am so blessed to have this opportunity working with such a wonderful staff as well as coaching an awesome group of girls. I am excited to see what this year brings. Go Bulldogs!"

Cowan played one year of softball for Union, but due to injury had to medically retire. However, she stayed involved with the softball program as a student assistant, leading her to the graduate assistant position. She prepped at Fayette Academy where she played softball for four years. She earned all-district honors in her last three seasons, and received her teams leadership award for those seasons as well. Cowan also played in the West Tennessee All-Star game, and received the Most Outstanding Pitcher award for her efforts.

Cowan is the daughter of Roger and Donna Cowan of Whiteville, Tenn.
