CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University softball team fell in the Saturday double-header to Lee University, but pulled together a win in the single game Sunday against the GSC foe. Union is now 22-20 on the season and 7-17 in league play. The Lady Flames improved to 28-12 on the season while posting a 15-9 conference record.
Union was swept in the Saturday double-header as Lee would take both games 8-0 in six inning run-rule victories. The Lady Bulldogs had just two hits in the first game, coming from
Hannah Ridolfi and
Emily Bennett. Ridolfi (12-9) took the loss in the game. Union failed to get the bats going in the second game as they were outhit 14-3.
The Lady Bulldogs came together and dominated the Lady Flames in six innings on Sunday.
Kristen Pickens pushed across the first Union run of the series on a single to right center to score
Paige Robertson from third in the top of the second. Later in the inning, bases were loaded for
Haley Barnette. Barnette sent a shot over the left field fence to give the Lady Bulldogs the 5-0 lead early in the game.
Lee was able to quite the Union bats until the sixth inning as the Lady Bulldogs picked up three more runs.
Taylor Griffith, pinch running for
Samantha Ortiz, would cross the plate on a couple errors by the Lady Flame defense. Barnette would stay hot as she then hit a single to left field to pick up two more RBIs on the day.
Union was led by Barnette with six RBIs while going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Gabby Morris (6-9) picked up the win in the circle with six innings of work scattering five hits while striking out five.
Up next, Union will take on the University of North Georgia Tuesday, April 11 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will return home for a GSC series against the reigning NCAA Division II National Campions, the University of North Alabama. Friday, April 14 the teams will face off in a double-header starting at 1 p.m. and single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
