Softball splits with No. 12 North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Union University softball team split in a non-conference series with No. 12 University of North Georgia. Union took the first game 2-1 in eight innings while North Georgia picked up the victory in the second game, 8-2.

GAME ONE
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union and North Georgia were locked in a pitcher's duel until a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth put UNG up 1-0.
  • Emily Bennett came up in the top of the sixth with Paige Robertson on second and Gabby Morris on third. Bennett singled through the right side to score Morris and tie the game 1-1.
  • Neither team would score to push the game to extra innings. The Lady Bulldogs pushed across a run in the top of the eight on a successful squeeze bunt by Kristen Pickens to score Bennett. North Georgia was unable to get a rally going in the bottom half of the inning to set the final, 2-1.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Emily Bennett led Union at the plate, going 3-for-3 picking up an RBI and a run scored. Paige Robertson and Ashley Scott each picked up two hits in the game.
  • Gabby Morris (7-9) picked up the eight inning win to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Morris allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.
  • North Georgia was led by Stephanie Hartness going 2-for-4, scoring the only run for UNG on her solo shot. Kylee Smith (21-4) took the loss on the mound. Smith struck out nine Union batters, but gave up two runs on eight Lady Bulldog hits.
 
GAME TWO
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Again, Union and North Georgia pitchers kept the offense quiet for the first half of the game. The North Georgia bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh as they put up seven runs.
  • Union got their first run of the game in the top of the fifth on a groundout RBI by Ashley Scott, but UNG would get the run back on a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-1.
  • The Lady Bulldogs would add a run in the top of the seventh on Scott's RBI single, but the rally would fall short as North Georgia took the victory, 8-2.
 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Ashley Scott led the way for the Lady Bulldogs, picking up two RBIs while going 1-for-4
  • Parker Davis (3-2) took the loss in her three innings of work. Davis gave up two runs on three hits. Ashley Graves would come on in relief going just 0.2 innings giving up three runs on one hit. Taylor Griffith would pitch the final 2.1 innings giving up three runs on two hits.
  • North Georgia was led by Kaylyn Anthony with three RBIs while going 2-for-3. Bria Bush (7-4) earned the win in the circle, going seven innings while giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bulldogs will return home for a GSC series against the reigning NCAA Division II National Campions, the University of North Alabama. Friday, April 14 the teams will face off in a double-header starting at 1 p.m. and single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
