Union softball drops final game to West Florida

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team fell in the final game of the series to West Florida. The sweep of the Lady Bulldogs continues a 19 game win streak for the Argonauts.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • West Florida took the early lead in the top of the first on a two run bomb by West Florida shortstop, Rhiannon Sassman. Union responded in the bottom half of the inning as Ashely Scott cut the UWF lead in half on a single through the left side that scored Paige Robertson. Haley Barnette would put the Lady Bulldogs ahead on a three-run blast to left center to give Union a 4-2 lead.
  • In the second inning, West Florida got a run back on an RBI double to trail Union 4-3. The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead as they put up two unearned runs in the bottom half of the second, 6-3.
  • Union was able to hold their lead until a bases loaded double in the fifth inning by the Argonauts tied the game, 6-6. UWF pushed three more runs across in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead.
  • Barnette singled in the sixth to pick up her fifth RBI of the day, and get Union within two of West Florida, 9-7.
  • The Argonauts bats continued to stay hot in the seventh inning as they pushed across two more runs. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to get a rally going and would fall 11-7.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Union was led by Haley Barnette who tallied five RBIs on the day while going 2-for-3 with a homerun and an RBI walk. Ashley Scott went 3-for-3 in the game while picking up one RBI and a run scored.
  • The Lady Bulldogs used three pitchers in the game, but Gabby Morris (5-9) took the loss going 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on six hits.
  • West Florida was led by Rhiannon Sassman who went 2-for-4 scoring twice and driving in four runs. Jacey Castro went 4-for-5 for the Argonauts driving in one run and scoring twice.
  • Becca Taylor started the game in the circle for West Florida, but would pick up the relief save while Sarah Maloney earned the win. Maloney went five innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits. Taylor gave up four runs on four hits, but did not allow a run in her final 1.2 innings of work.
 
UP NEXT
Union will start a five game road trip starting at Lee University Saturday, April 8 in a double header starting at 1 p.m.
