Union softball sweeps Miles in mid-week action

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team earned a double-header sweep with 7-2 and 9-1 (6) wins over Miles College Wednesday afternoon at Fesmire Field.

GAME 1
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union scored first in the bottom of the first when Emily Bennett scored after stealing second and third bases.  
  • Union added four more runs in the third, all unearned. Samantha Ortiz had an RBI double with two outs to drive in the third run of the inning.
  • Miles got on the board with a couple of unearned runs in the sixth. Webb reached with a bunt single, the first hit of the game for the Golden Bears off Union pitcher Gabby Morris.
  • Union answered with two runs in the six on a 2-RBI single from Ashley Scott.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Union's Gabby Morris (4-3) allowed two runs, no earned runs on two hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Jakari Suggs (0-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned with one strikeout.
  • Union's Emily Bennett, Ashley Scott and LaDesha Nelson led with two hits each. Scott's two RBI were a game high. One double each from Bennett, Morris and Ortiz were the only extra base hits in the game for Union.
 
GAME 2
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union again scored first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A double by Scott scored Bennett from first. Scott later scored from third base on a throwing error following a single form Gabby Morris.
  • Two more runs scored for Union in the second inning. Abby Swilley led off the second with a line drive shot over the center field fence. Hanna Ridolfi followed with a double. She moved to third on an over thrown pickoff attempt and later scored on a wild pitch. Union led 4-0 after the second.
  • Miles got an unearned run in the third. However, Union ended the game early with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three of the five were unearned. Union got hits from Paige Robertson, Hailey Cummings and Scott in the innings. Hanna Ridolfi added an RBI with a sacrifice fly, while Kristen Pickens got an RBI on a safety squeeze bunt.
 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Hannah Ridolfi (7-4) allowed just three hits and just one unearned run with five strikeouts and no walks in her six innings.
  • Scott led Union with two hits and two RBI in the second game.
  • Reese (0-6) for Miles took the loss, along nine runs, five earned with four strikeouts and three walks.
