CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team dropped three games to Delta State University. Union dropped to 11-8 on the season with a league record of 3-6.
In the first game of the Saturday double-header, the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Statesmen were locked in a pitchers duel. Delta State scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 1-0. They would then pick up another three runs on a long ball in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Union was unable to get on the board to fall 4-0 in the first game of the series.
The Lady Bulldogs scored their first run of the day in the first inning of the second game.

Hannah Ridolfi home to give Union their first lead of the series. DSU responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game on a RBI single. The game would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Statesmen would pick up a run on a sacrifice fly. That would prove enough to get the win for Delta State as they took the second game, 2-1.
In the final game of the series, Union scored two in the top of the first inning on two RBI singles from
Hailey Cummings and
Haley Barnette. The 2-0 lead would not last long as Delta State scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 3-2. The Lady Bulldogs would take back the lead as they picked up two runs in the next inning.
Again, Union scored the runs on two singles from Paige Robertson and Cummings to go up 4-3. DSU would come back in the bottom half to tie the score 4-4.
Both teams were scoreless in the third inning. Union's Morris gave the Lady Bulldogs another run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to lead, 5-4. Delta State would then bust the game open, scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Union would get another run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Statesmen would complete the sweep with a 16-6 victory.
Up next, Union will return home in a weekday double-header against Lane College Tuesday, March 7 starting at 2 and 4 pm.
