Union softball swept by No. 6 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University softball team dropped all three games in a conference series to Valdosta State University. The Lady Bulldogs fell 10-2, 5-0, and 4-0. Union drops to 14-13 on the season while falling to 4-11 in league play. Valdosta State, who is ranked No. 6, improved to 24-6 overall while leading the conference with a 13-2 record.
 
The Lady Bulldogs fell 10-2 in the opening game to the Lady Blazers. Union scored first on a solo shot to right center by Gabby Morris, but VSU answered in the bottom half of the second to tie the game 1-1. Ashley Scott would give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the third on a single to score Emily Bennett. Union was unable to hold off Valdosta as they scored nine unanswered runs to take the game in six innings.
 
In the second game of the Saturday double-header, the Lady Blazers continued their momentum taking down Union 5-0. Valdosta State's pitcher, Avery Lamb threw the three-hit shutout to lead VSU to the double-header sweep.
 
In the final game of the series on Sunday, Union allowed four runs in the first inning, but was able to settle in to shut down the Lady Blazer offense. Hannah Ridolfi came on in relief to throw five innings allowing just one hit. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to string hits together on Lamb who allowed just two hits in her four innings of work while Kasie Johnson threw the remaining three innings allowing one hit.
 
Union will return home for a weekday double-header against cross town rival Lane College on Thursday, March 23 starting at 2 p.m.
