COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Union University softball team split on opening day at the Southern Softball Showdown. The Lady Bulldogs fell 10-2 against Columbus State University, but came back in the second game to defeat the University of Montevallo 8-0. Both games ended in a six inning mercy rule.

Game 1
WHAT HAPPENED
- Columbus State's bats came out on fire in the bottom of the first inning. A single, walk, and three other singles scored CSU's first three runs. The fourth run was scored on a ground out, which was also the first out of the first inning. The next two Cougar batters hit into outs to get the Lady Bulldogs out of the inning trailing, 4-0.
- Union cut the score in half, 4-2, in the top of the third inning after Haley Barnette singled in Emily Bennett and LaDesha Nelson who both reached on singles earlier in the inning.
- The Cougars would strike again in the bottom of the first on a double to left center to score two more runs, 6-2.
- Columbus would finish off the Lady Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth inning by way of mercy rule after scoring four more runs.
POSTGAME STATS
- Emily Bennett led Union going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Haley Barnette had the lone two RBI's for the Lady Bulldogs.
- Hannah Ridolfi took the loss after going five innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Parker Davis came in relief and gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits.
- Columbus State was led by Smith going 3-for-4, while two other players led with three RBI's each.
Game 2
WHAT HAPPENED
- Union was able to turn it around in game two against the University of Montevallo. The Lady Bulldogs scored first in the top of the third inning on a two-run homerun from freshman, Ashely Scott.
- Union put up two more runs in the fourth inning on a single by Rachel Ridolfi to score Emily Boone. Later in the inning, Rachel Ridolfi would steal home to give the Lady Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
- Hannah Ridolfi would score on an illegal pitch in the fifth inning. Gabby Morris would then come up to bat and single in Paige Robertson to lead the Falcons, 6-0.
- The Lady Bulldogs would end the game in the sixth by mercy rule after LaDesha Nelson scored on an error by Montevallo's catcher and Emily Bennett would score on Hannah Ridolfi's single up the middle. Union would take the game, 8-0.
POSTGAME STATS
- Union was led by Gabby Morris at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Ashley Scott led with two RBI's.
- Morris also led the Lady Bulldogs on the mound going five innings giving up one hit and five walks with four strikeouts. In relief, Hannah Ridolfi came in the last inning to push Union to victory.
- Montevallo's lone hit came from Van Steenwyk who was pinch hitting.
UP NEXT
Union will play two more games in the Southern Softball Showdown, Sunday, February 5. The Lady Bulldogs will take on Flagler College at 8 a.m. and Lynn University at 10:30 a.m.
