Union softball earns first GSC wins over CBU

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team picked up a pair of Gulf South Conference wins over Christian Brothers University. Union improved to 10-5 on the season and 2-3 in the league. Christian Brothers dropped to 0-5 in the GSC and 2-11 overall.

Game 1
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union pushed their first run across in the bottom half of the first inning. Gabby Morris singled up the middle to score Hannah Ridolfi who reached on a single.
  • The Lady Bulldogs would score three runs in the third to go on top 4-0. Ashley Scott would pick up an RBI on a double to the left field fence. Scott would come around to score on a bomb by Gabby Morris over the left field fence.
  • Union would put the game away in the sixth inning, picking up four runs to earn the mercy rule win. LaDesha Nelson sent a shot back at the pitcher to score pinch runner, Anna Morris. Scott would add to her RBI totals in the next at-bat with a shot over the left field fence. Gabby Morris would come to bat next and send a double to the fence. Paige Robertson would put the game away, sending a game winning double to left center to score Morris from second.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Gabby Morris led Union going 3-for-4 with a homer, picking up three RBIs and two runs scored. Ashley Scott would go 2-for -3 with three RBIs as well.
  • Hannah Ridolfi (5-3) would go the distance picking up the shutout win, going six innings, giving up four hits and striking out four.
  • Jenna Cotter would receive the loss in the circle for Christian Brothers giving up four runs on six hits.

Game 2
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union would run into some defensive trouble in the top of the first inning as Christian Brothers scored three runs, one earned.
  • The Lady Bucs would again score in the second inning to take a four run lead, 4-0, over the Lady Bulldogs.
  • Union would get one run back in the bottom half of the inning as Kristen Pickens singled through the left side to score Abby Swilley.
  • The Lady Bulldog bats would come alive in the fourth inning as Swilley got things started on a double to left center to pick up two RBI's to cut the CBU lead, 4-3. Pickens would also pick up two RBIs on a double of her own to give Union the lead, 5-4. Scott would hit Union's third double of the inning to extend the Lady Bulldog lead to 7-5 as Nelson and Hannah Ridolfi scored on the play.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Hannah Ridolfi, Abby Swilley, and Kristen Pickes each had two hits in the ball game. Pickens led Union with three RBIs while Swilley and Ashley Scott picked up two.
  • Gabby Morris (3-1) picked up the win on the mound going five innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits and three strikeouts. Ridolfi would come in to earn the save and pick up the final out of the ball game.
  • CBU's Julia Schassburger recieved the loss giving up seven earned runs on 11 Lady Bulldog hits.

Union will host Christian Brothers in the final game of this three-game series, Sunday, February 26 at 1 p.m.
