Union softball sweeps day two of Union Softball Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team picked up two more wins in the Union University Softball Classic. Union picked up a come from behind win over Maryville University, 4-2. The Lady Bulldogs would then take down Tusculum College 8-2 in game two.

Game 1
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union and Maryville were locked in a pitcher's duel until the top of the fourth inning. Maryville busted the game open when Emily Frankenreiter tripled to right field to score Bri Livingston to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Maryville would score again on a successful squeeze bunt by Casey Ward to score Frenkenreiter to lead the Lady Bulldogs, 2-0.
  • Union was hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Hannah Ridolfi came up to the plate and nailed a triple to right field. LaDesha Nelson would then come up and single to the pitcher to put runners on first and third. Ashley Scott would get hit by the pitch to lead the bases for Union. Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week, Gabby Morris, would come up and pick up a two RBI double to left field to tie the game, 2-2. With runners at second and third, Paige Robertson would pick up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field. Robertson would come around to score on the Lady Bulldogs' second triple of the inning coming off the bat of Rachel Ridolfi to give Union a 4-0 lead.
  • Union would hold off the Saints to set the final 4-0.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Gabby Morris led the Lady Bulldogs going 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.
  • Morris started the game on the mound, going four innings giving up two runs on one hit and two strikeouts. Hannah Ridolfi would come on in relief to pick up her third win of the season giving up no hits and striking out one.
  • Maryville's one hit came off the bat of Emily Frankenreiter who picked up an RBI and a run scored. Alyssa Callans took the tough loss going 5.1 innings giving up four runs on three hits.

Game 2
WHAT HAPPENED
  • In Union's second game, Tusculum scored first in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Morgan Mahaffey. The Lady Bulldogs would then even the score in the bottom half of the inning when LaDesha Nelson scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • Union would bust the game open in the bottom half of the fourth scoring four runs in the inning. Paige Robertson got things started with a single through the left side. Hailey Cummings would then reach on a bunt single to the shortstop. Another single by Abby Swilley would score Robertson to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Rachel Ridolfi would pick up an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop to score Cummings. Ashley Scott would hit Union's sixth single of the inning to pick up an RBI to lead the Pioneers, 5-1.
  • The Lady Bulldogs would pick up three more runs in the fifth inning. Molly McKelvy, pinch running for Hailey Cummings who reached on a single, would score on a single from Peyton Mathis. Hannah Ridolfi would help her own cause singling to center field with the bases loaded to pick up two RBI's.
  • Tusculum would score one in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double to centerfield, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to hold on to get the victory, 8-2.

POSTGAME STATS
  • Hailey Cummings led Union going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Hannah Ridolfi and Ashley Scott each went 2-for-4 and each had two RBI's.
  • Ridolfi went the distance on the mound, pitching seven innings giving up two runs on four hits.
  • Cayla Cecil took the loss on the mound for the Pioneers going four innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits. Taylor Plemons would come on in relief and go two innings giving up three runs on five hits.

UP NEXT
Union will open up league play on the road against Shorter University with a double header on Saturday, February 18 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
