JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Fisk University 107-59 Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 17 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches Poll, improved to 8-1 overall. Fisk dropped to 1-9.
Union took the lead early with a pair of free throws form Sara Lytle to go Union up 2-0, seven seconds into the game. Union scored the first five points, followed by a 3-pointer from Fisk. Union then ran out to a double digit lead and never looked back.
Lytle started a 9-0 run, three minutes into the first quarter stretching Union's lead to 14. Fisk's Ti'ara Clark finished a layup to put Union's run to a halt, making the score 19-7.
Union then went on a 12-0 run, with four different Union players contributing. AnnaLea Little finished the first quarter with a shot from long range, making the score 34-9.
Avree Carpenter opened the second quarter with another 3-pointer for Union. Fisk responded with a shot beyond the arc from Jada Jones.
Just under the nine minute mark, Chelsey Shumpert started another 12-0 run for Union, making the score 51-14. To close out the second quarter, Fisk went on a 11-0 run, cutting the score to 58-27.
Fisk scored the first two points of the second half, but Shumpert then started 13-0 run that ended with a good three-pointer from Tiffany Rechis.
Union added to their lead and ended the third quarter with a score of 83-37.
Lytle and Elli Pratt combined for the first five points of the fourth quarter. Fisk's Lashae Brown responded with a pair of free throws and a shot from long range. Tiara Caldwell had 11 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter. Fisk posted their highest scoring quarter of the game with 22 points in the fourth quarter. The final score was 107-59.
Union was lead by Caldwell with 27 points and nine rebounds. The nation's leading scorer, Shumpert, finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Lytle had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Rechis had 15 points. Jada Perkins added eight assists and nine points. Union shot 52 percent from the field, 35 percent (14-39) from 3-point range, and 63 percent (17-27) from the free throw line.
Fisk was lead by Jada Jones with 18 points. Lashae Brown had 11 points and four rebounds. Fisk was 42 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point (9-22) range, and 57 (8-14) percent from the free throw line.
