Union women top Rust in final non-conference game

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University Lady Bulldogs defeated Rust (Miss.) College 97-33 Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 11 in the D2SIDA Poll and receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches Poll, improved to 9-1 overall. The Lady Bearcats fell to 3-7 overall.

The game for Union was the final regular season non-conference game of the season. Union will play GSC games for the remainder of the regular season, starting Monday night at home versus Christian Brothers. 

AnnaLea Little hit a three pointer, four seconds into the game for Union. Union started the game with an 18-0 run. It wasn't until the 5:02 mark that Rust made a layup to break the scoreless streak. Union hit four threes in the first quarter.

Brilee Bromley started the second quarter off for Union with a shot behind the arc. Rust College was more active in the second quarter with 12 points, but Union was able to keep the lead and went into the locker room up 56-18.

Tiffany Rechis scored Union's first four points of the second half with a three-point shot and a free throw. Union outscored Rust 19-2 in the third quarter.

For the fourth quarter in a row, Union started off with a three-pointer, this time from Sara Lytle. Rust had their best quarter of 13 points, but Union cruised to the win, 97-33.

Union was led by Lytle with 19 points while adding nine rebounds. Rechis and Caldwell each had 15 points. Caldwell added 15 rebounds to receive her first double-double on the season. Perkins had 13 points and Chelsey Shumpert added 11 points. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 30 percent (13-43) from long range, and 83 percent (10-12) from the free throw line. 

Rust was led by Takerri Cooks with eight points, while Lisa Crawford led with 10 rebounds. The Bearcats shot 21 percent from the field, 19 percent (3-16) from 3-point range, and 55 percent (6-11) from the free throw line.
