Baseball falls in series with West Florida

JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University baseball team dropped three straight to West Florida in the weekend's Gulf South Conference series. With the sweep Union falls to 8-12 in conference and have lost seven straight conference games going back to their series with Valdosta State.
Game One: West Florida 8, Union 4
West Florida got on the board in game one of the series in the top of the first inning with an RBI single that scored one run. They doubled their lead in the fourth when Jean Figueroa scored on a wild pitch to give the Argos a 2-0 lead.
Union tied the game up on one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the fourth when freshman Bailey Holbrook belted a ball to right field that cleared the fence scoring Ryne Roper and tied the game at 2-2.
UWF responded in the top of the sixth inning regaining the lead with a four run inning with the help of a two RBI triple and an RBI single followed by a runner coming to score on a wild pitch to lead 6-2.
The Bulldogs closed the gap in the sixth and seventh when Holbrook homered in his second straight at bat then Zach Wylie lifted a ball to rigth field that scored Zach Phillips that cut UWF's lead to just two runs, 6-4.
The Argos stretched their lead out to four runs once again in the eighth with two RBI singles and Union would not be able to mount a comeback to fall 8-4. 
Bailey Holbrook led the Bulldogs at the plate with his first two career homeruns which led to three RBI in game one. Zach Wylie also helped the Union on the offensive side with two hits including a double and an RBI on the sacrifice fly ball. Teddy Christie started the game for Union on the bump going 7.0 innings giving up six runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts, with five coming in the first three innings. Joe Hudson and Andrew Wilson split the remaining two innings in relief each going 1.0 inning.
Game Two: West Florida 17, Union 4
West Florida carried their momentum from their victory in the first game of the series into the second game of the double header exploding for five runs in the top of the first inning with the help of three RBI singles. 
Union got a run back in the bottom half of the first inning when Bailey Holbrook came in to score on a fielders choice off the bat or Tyler Mauzy. Holbrook came up big again for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth sending his third homer of the day out to left center plating Mason Castile in the process. 
Unfortunately, it was all West Florida in the game as they scored a single run in the third, three in the fifth, six more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to lead 17-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Union managed to score a run in the bottom half of the seventh when Jesse Kelley came up with an RBI single scoring Matthew Duncan, but fell in the game 17-4.
Bailey Holbrook ended the game as the only Bulldog to record multiple hits going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, to end up the day 5-for-7 and raising his season average by 58 points to .262.
Game Three: West Florida 7, Union 2
The Argos were first to get on the board in the third game of the series on Sunday afternoon in the top of the fourth scoring on back-to-back RBI singles giving UWF the 2-0 lead. West Florida added another run in the sixth when Robert Lopez tripled to left center pushing home another run.
Union finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ryne Roper singled to left field scoring Zach Wylie to cut the UWF lead to two, 3-1.
West Florida regained their three run advantage in the next half inning scoring on another RBI single. The Argos busted the game open in the top of the ninth with a bases clearing double from Michael Savas pushing their lead to 7-1. Union added a run in the bottom half of the seventh on a groundout, but ultimately fell short 7-2.
Zach Wylie led Union at the plate going 3-for-4 including a double to left center in the bottom of the ninth inning. Matthew Pickard started the game for the Bulldogs going 7.2 innings giving up four runs on 11 hits. 
Union travels to Nashville on Tuesday to take on Trevecca Nazarene at 6:00 pm. The Bulldogs return home on Saturday to get back into Gulf South Conference action hosting Lee University with a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
