JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team earned a double-header split with Delta State (Miss.) University Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game 8-7. Delta State then returned the favor with a rally in the top of the seventh of the second game to win 5-3. Union is now 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State moved to 10-7 on the season and 5-3 in league play.
In the first game, Delta State scored four runs in the top of the first, two of which were unearned. Union added a run in the second on a RBI single from Zach Wylie. DSU put two more on the board in the fourth to lead 6-1. Union added another run in the fifth on a RBI single form Ryne Roper. Delta made it 7-2 with a run in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Union scored twice on a two RBI double from Wylie. In the eighth, Union got even closer with Roper singled in Zach Phillips to make it 7-5. In the bottom of the ninth, Union got to within one run when Charlie Ellis had a pinch-hit single to score Wylie. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tyler Mauzy singled up the middle to drive in Mason Castile and Baily Halbrook to win the game for the Bulldogs.
Marty Coursey tossed seven innings for Union, allowing seven runs, four earned on 10 hits with one strikeout. Joe Hudson (2-1) tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit and no walks with a strikeout to earn the win. Roper led Union with four hits, while Mauzy added three and Wylie had two. Wylie led with three RBI, while Mauzy and Roper added two each.
In the second game, Delta State again scored first with a run in the first. Union tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a Dylan Moore RBI single. DSU took the lead again in the third with a Brandon Cummings home run to right field. Union tied the game in the fourth when Wylie scored on a throwing error. Union added another unearned run in the fifth when Mauzy scored on a throwing error. With Union up 3-2 in the last inning of the seven inning game, Delta State's Chris Welch this 2-run home run to left to give his team the lead. The Statesmen added an insurance run to lead 5-3. Union failed to score in the bottom of the seventh.
Teddie Christie (2-1) took his first loss of the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing five run, four earned on seven this with seven strikeouts. Hudson got the final two outs of the top of the seventh. Mauzy had two more hits to lead Union while Moore had the lone RBI for Union.
Up next will be the rubber game of the series, March 6 at 1 p.m. at Fesmire Field.
